5 DIY Hair Mask Recipes

Admit it: you put your hair through a lot. The impact of treatments, over-washing, weather, dyeing, bleaching and so much more can leave your locks desperate for TLC. Dryness, dandruff, grease – whatever issue is causing you stress, it’s possible to give your hair the salon-quality care it needs from your own home. Plus, you can use ingredients you already have in the cupboard. Here are five sumptuous DIY hair mask recipes for a range of hair types and problems.

For Dry Hair

Ingredients: 1 tbsp coconut oil, 1 tbsp honey

Coconut oil and honey are wonderfully rich, natural substances that will help your hair retain moisture and prevent breakages.

  • Mix the ingredients and heat them in the microwave until they’ve melted.
  • Starting at the roots, apply the mask to your hair and let it sit for 20 minutes.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water.

For Damaged Hair

Ingredients: 1 ripe banana, 1 tbsp olive oil

Bananas contain potassium, which works towards strengthening hair and balancing the scalp’s pH levels, while olive oil is full of vitamin E, which helps heal damage and add sleekness.

  • Mash the banana until it’s free of lumps, then add the olive oil and continue mixing until it’s creamy.
  • Apply the mask all over your hair and scalp whilst in the shower, leave for 15 minutes, then rinse.

For Greasy Hair

Ingredients: juice from half a lemon, 1 egg white

The citric acid in lemon juice will help clean away any buildup of products or dirt, while vitamin C is great for increasing your hair’s strength. Egg whites are rich in enzymes that contribute to neutralising excess oil.

  • Combine the ingredients and apply them to your hair, starting at the roots.
  • Leave on for half an hour, then rinse with lukewarm water.

To Help Hair Grow

Ingredients: 1 tbsp coconut oil, 1 tsp cinnamon

More coconut oil! We can’t overstress its benefits for in-home hair care. Cinnamon helps with cleansing and strengthening follicles, as well as soothing an irritated scalp.

  • Mix the ingredients thoroughly.
  • Part your hair in the middle and apply the mask to the parting and your scalp, then tie up and cover your hair.
  • Leave the mask on for 45 minutes and then wash your hair as normal.

For Dandruff

Ingredients: 2 tbsp coconut oil, 4 tsp sugar, 5 drops peppermint oil, 2 drops tea tree oil

Tea tree oil may as well be magic – it’s antibacterial, antimicrobial and antifungal! The sugar in this mask exfoliates away dead skin cells, while the peppermint oil helps to replenish the skin by increasing circulation to the scalp.

  • Mix the ingredients and apply to clean, wet hair whilst in the shower.
  • Massage it in for a few minutes, then leave it on for the rest of your shower, then rinse.
