6 Daily Self Love Tips

Having spent the last year locked inside our homes, spending more and more time with ourselves, we have come to the hard conclusion that it’s not easy. Prior to the pandemic, we had other means of release that would allow us to feel more centered, less stressed and overall general balance.

However, not being able to dedicate that time to go to the gym, meet up with friends or go out for some window-shopping and a coffee has caused many of us to feel down, depressed and even feel hardship when approaching simple tasks, especially if they seemed hard before.

Nonetheless, there are things that we can do to feel more at ease and to show a little love to ourselves on the daily, ensuring that we are creating a good environment for our mental health. These daily self-love tips will not only allow you to find balance in the current circumstances but will also provide a base for you to look at your future with perspective and help decide what works best for YOU

Meditate

Meditation has been around for centuries with Gandhi and Osho showing us the benefits of relaxing your mind and how it can provide peace and balance. Meditation can give us a sense of calm and benefits both your emotional well-being and overall health. It’s also proven to improve mental health and thicken the prefrontal cortex, helping increase awareness, concentration and decision making. 10 minutes or more of daily meditation can make the world of difference and help you feel more centered throughout the day.

Affirmations

Affirmations are positive statements that help you to challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts. Repeating them and truly investing belief in them can help you start to make positive changes to your attitude, mental health and overall well-being. You decide on the affirmations that you need to work on and how many times a day you feel like you may need to repeat them. Some great affirmations to start your day off are:

  • I believe in my dreams.
  • I am grateful for everything I have and everything I have overcome.
  • am in charge of my own happiness.
  • accept 100% responsibility for my life.
  • The best is yet to come.

By doing daily affirmations, you learn to take a step back and take control of the thoughts that may be overwhelming or bringing you downAn incredible app that I’ve been using lately is “I am” where you can set the app to send you affirmations throughout the day based on what you need support on, i.e. “I am worthy, I can accomplish everything I want, I deserve to take a break.” It makes it easier to ensure that you are keeping a positive mentality all day

Stop comparing yourself to others

We have heard this so many times in our lifetime, yet we still find ourselves wanting to compare ourselves to other people to determine our value, and we need to stop. Your selfworth is not determined by other people’s accomplishments, they are determined by your own. By comparing yourself to othersyou are creating a space in your mind for negative thoughts to creep in and essentially making you take your eye off your goal and start striving for someone else’s.

The best approach, if you choose to compare yourself to someone else, is seeing that person as a mentor or a guide. See what techniques and skills they have used to accomplish their goals, are those goals the same as yours? Do they inspire you? Is that really what YOU want to do? It’s always important to remember that we cannot control everything and that the only person you should compare yourself to is your past self. You can then determine whether you have grown and where there is room for improvement.

Make time for your hobbies

Making time for the things you love and things that make you happy will enable you to release stress and find clarity. Whether its painting, reading or simply going on a long hike, doing these things will help release endorphins, which are the chemicals released in your body to make you feel happy and at ease. Sometimes, prioritising yourself and your wellbeing can be hard, but this is an act of self-love in itself.

Get rid of toxicity in your life

Toxicity can cause you to find yourself lost or stressed, whether it’s a situation, relationship or job. There are simple tips that you can follow to make sure you eliminate those toxic aspects and allow you to prevent it from happening again:

  1. Identify the toxicity
  2. Be firm
  3. Set your boundaries
  4. Don’t be TOO nice
  5. It’s not your job to save them (this one applies to friendships and relationships)
  6. Know that when it’s done, it’s done!
  7. Treat your separation like the breakup it is.

If you apply these tips towards any toxicity in your life and proactively start to make a change, you will start to feel like everything is falling into place.

Be kind to yourself

There is no doubt that sometimes we aren’t the nicest to ourselves, especially if we’re feeling down or overwhelmed, but that is no excuse to treat yourself negatively or cause harm to your self-esteem due to something out of your control. A little daily pep-talk in the mirror to remind yourself the “you are enough” will set you up for a great day. Remember that you are your biggest fan and once you realise that, so will everyone else.

Takeaway

Even if you don’t feel particularly powerful right now, think about how far you’ve come. Remember to be patient with yourself. Self-love doesn’t happen overnight, just like Rome wasn’t built in a day. Yes, you may feel like you’re struggling, but you’ll look back on these moments and realise how they were stepping stones on your journey to becoming the best version of yourself.
