The Author Who Will Not Be Named: Harry Potter 20 Year Reunion

Fans are ecstatic about the Harry Potter cast reunion celebrating the franchises 20th anniversary.

What’s made fans even more excited for the reunion is that there has been no mention of the series creator in the anniversary special that is due to air on HBO Max on 1st January (for us in the UK, we might have to wait but it’ll be worth it). And as the title suggests, her name will not be mentioned!

The special will feature a jaw-dropping list of beloved cast members that brought the character’s to life – including the main trio Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson who have not been seen in public together since when the final film premiered back in 2011 – 10 years ago!

Appearance from other stars are also Bellatrix Lestrange’s Helena Bonham Carter, Hagrid’s Robbie Coltrane, Lord Voldemort’s Ralph Fiennes, Sirius Black’s Gary Oldman, Draco Malfoy’s Tom Felton, Dolores Umbridge’s Imelda Staunton and Neville Longbottom’s Matthew Lewis. While the author will not appear in the show, archival footage of her on set might be included in the show.

Her controversial comments over the past few years have spread far and wide, even making some sway in the UK Government. The fanbase for Harry Potter continues to grow and so does a hatred towards the creator. The author has made comments against the trans community, whilst her books are known for their limited representation. In June 2020, she took to Twitter to criticize an opinion piece that used the term ‘people who menstruate’ instead of women. While she was immediately met with backlash from fans, the LGBTQ+ community and other celebrities, she continues to spread hateful messages.

Then, in September 2020, she faced renewed calls of transphobia after it was revealed the villain in her latest book, Troubled Blood – written under her pseudonym – is a male serial killer who dresses as a woman to slay his victims.

Many fans’ hearts have been broken by her views, with Harry Potter being a central point for the childhood of many. It is important to remember, you can separate the art from the artist – death of the author am I right? The Death of the Author theory was created by Barthes and discusses that we as readers need to separate a literary work from its creator, in order to liberate the text.

The cast member and director will get to discuss what it was like growing up alongside their characters and reminisce on their favourite moments. Truly a personal journey about a series near and dear to the hearts of many of us.

Who else is excited to see where the magic all began?
