The Ins & Outs of Glycolic Acid

The intricate world of skincare can be daunting enough without terms like ‘acid’ thrown into the mix, especially when it comes to what you might want to be putting on your face! But, if there’s one thing you should consider researching, it’s glycolic acid. From reducing fine lines to banishing blemishes, this wonder-product really does pledge to wipe out your skin’s woes for all ages.

What is glycolic acid?

Glycolic acid is a chemical exfoliant (or a type of Alpha-Hydroxy acid if you want to get technical!) found in cleansers, toners and serums that is used to help break down and remove dead skin cells in favour of anti-ageing properties and a brighter looking complexion. It’s thought to be one of the most effective products on the market due to its molecular make-up and penetrability of the skin, getting deeper, and quicker, into the layers of your skin. A little goes a long way!

So, how does it benefit my skin?

Well, probably in every way possible! Glycolic acid primarily helps to exfoliate the skin which brings with it an extensive list of benefits – unclogging pores, eradicating dry skin and evening skin tone. It may feel more satisfying to feel the friction of scrubbing away facial debris, but opting for chemically rather than a physically abrasive exfoliant means your skin avoids the micro-tears caused by rough particles. As we ourselves get older, our skin closely follows suit and wastes no time in looking dull and drab if we dont ensure we remove those dead skin cells regularly. AHAs like glycolic acid do the job brilliantly and promote regeneration of skin cells leading to a more radiant face underneath.

How do I use it?

Despite the fancy packaging, glycolic acid is still just that, an acid. It’s advisable to start small at first and figure out whether it’s a suitable product for you, especially if you’ve got sensitive skin. It’s best to stick to one acid-based product, due to the nature of its function and active ingredient, and to a low concentration % too if it’s your first time. Luckily, there are a multitude of different formats and strengths depending on your preference and skin needs, but be mindful that even the ‘daily use’ creams could be strong for a beginner, so build usage up carefully. Products with a + 10% strength should never be used more than once a week – and your skin will agree!

When do I use it?

It’s strongly recommended to apply your glycolic product as part of your evening skincare routine, all down to the fact that it can make your skin highly sensitive to harmful UV rays, so applying at night means it has longer to work its magic on your skin away from direct sunlight and any resulting damage. As a general skincare rule and as part of your daily routine, you should apply SPF every morning to ensure maximum skin safety – even when it’s a cloudy day.
