I don’t know about you, but I love researching new places to go and stay – that bucket list doesn’t write itself, you know!
High on my list is Oslo, capital of Norway. I’m not entirely sure why I’ve always dreamed of visiting Oslo – maybe it’s the appeal of the fjords, beautiful sculptures, fascinating history and museums… Either way, it conjures up images of innovative architecture, stunning galleries and breathtaking views.
But, where would you stay in such a stunning city? Norway, and especially its capital, embraces all things sustainability and friluftsliv – outdoor living, for the non-Norwegian speakers among us. Excitingly, there’s a brand-new hotel that’s opened its doors in the vibrant, sustainable community of Økern Portal: Radisson RED Økern. It’s part of the local sustainability-focused business area, and boasts some incredible eco-friendly elements from energy use, to – get this – a rooftop garden.
To include some of the credentials (I’ll get to the jaw-droppingly gorgeous interior in a moment), the hotel has been certified ‘Excellent’ by one of the world’s leading science-based systems for determining the sustainability of buildings. This takes into account things like the low impact design and carbon emissions, as well as its commitment to protecting biodiversity.
Radisson RED Økern also uses rain catchers to water its rooftop garden, and makes use of the Økern Portal community’s energy wells which produce 90% of the heating for the entire development. Sounds great, right?
Well, not only does the hotel DO great things, it also looks incredible. There are over 200 rooms (definitely got room for me then), which have a really playful twist on conventional design – including a bright red tiger standing directly outside the lobby!
Apparently, Oslo is nicknamed Tigerstaden (or Tiger City) –according to local legend, this nickname comes from a poet called Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson who always represented Oslo as a tiger in his poetry.
On the top floor is the restaurant, where you can kick back and relax after a long day of touring the city and still be treated to stunning views of the city and the fjords beyond. If you’re not staying at the hotel, you can still take advantage of the bar and outdoor terrace, and there’s even a DJ on Friday and Saturday nights if that’s your thing!
If you’re in a more… grown-up state of mind, shall we say, the hotel also has function rooms that you can use for conferences and meetings, including breakout rooms. I’ve actually been researching conference spaces recently (long story), and would absolutely love to come here to brainstorm and sip delicious cocktails *ahem*, I mean coffee…
It’s such a beautiful looking hotel that is located in exactly the right spot. It’s the second Radisson RED hotel in Oslo, and it’s only 15 minutes away from the main train station. The local area, Økern Portal, is known for green spaces and sustainable initiatives, and Radisson RED fits right in with a creative approach to hospitality.
So, what are you waiting for? There’s a giant red tiger just waiting to welcome you to Oslo, and you can guarantee a warm welcome at Radisson RED Økern.
