DIY Christmas Gift Guide: Something For Everyone

Christmas is rapidly approaching! If you haven’t started your Christmas shopping yet, you’re not alone… But we all know that the closer it gets to Christmas week, the crazier the shops get.

If you want to avoid the shopping rush, give unique, thoughtful gifts, and have some fun at the same time, why not do DIY Christmas gifts this year? It’s a chance to exercise your creativity, really tune into the people you love, and surprise them with something unusual.

why diy your gifts?

One of the best things about DIY gifts is that they’re personal. Even if you give everyone the same thing, it doesn’t escape people that you took the time to create this gift with your own hands. It doesn’t matter if it’s a consumable or something they’ll keep around for ages.

They’re generally more affordable as well, which is a bonus for you, especially during financially tricky times like Chrstmas. You also have the opportunity to upcycle or recycle stuff, which means DIYing your Christmas gifts is not only good for you and the person receiving the gift, but it can be great for the planet as well!

For The Foodie

If you’re gifting a foodie, it’s a lovely idea to create a snack box filled with homemade items. For a savoury tooth, add things like biltong (dried, spiced meat), homemade potato chips, spiced nuts, roasted chickpeas, and the like. Those with a sweet tooth should appreciate treats like brownies, marmalades, cookies, candied fruits, and so on.

Another fun idea is to brew some homemade liquor! If you don’t have time to brew something special or you aren’t quite confident, you can give them a home brewing kit and have fun brewing your favourites together!

For The Eco-Warrior

Know someone who cares a whole lot about the planet? Why not make them something eco-friendly and practical? They’ll be pleased that you took the time to create a unique product specially for them, keeping in mind their feelings about the environment.

Some good ideas (depending on the person) include toiletries (shaving cream, bath bombs, lotions, lip balms, etc), decor items (candles, wax firestarters, etc), or vegan sweet treats! Be sure to include a list of ingredients so your person knows they’re truly eco-friendly.

Score bonus points if you wrap your gifts in sustainable packaging. This could mean choosing recyclable paper, or wrapping it in a reusable cloth instead. For example, wrap someone’s gift in a scarf and make the scarf part of the gift.

For The Fitness Buff

Got someone in your life who loves fitness and counts calories? I can guarantee they’ll love some kind of homemade protein snack. Protein bars, protein cupcakes, protein doughnut holes… There are endless options!

For best results, use a whey-casein protein blend. It bakes much nicer than others, and your fitness enthusiast will appreciate that you did a bit of research! If you want extra brownie points, calculate how many calories are in each serving so they can fit each serving easily into their eating plan.

For You Fluffs

We can’t forget the fluffy family members who bring us so much joy! They’re as much a part of the family as any of the humans.

What do your pups and kitties love more than something delicious? Cuddles, of course, but you’re going to be giving them those anyway. Homemade dog and cat treats not only make your fluffs very happy, but you also know exactly what goes into them which means they’re likely to be healthier than store-bought treats.

If you know your pet loves the taste of something specific—tuna, peanut butter, etc—you can make them healthy, wholesome treats in their favourite flavour.

For Your Special Someone

You can take DIY as far as you want to. And for your special person, you might want to do something a little more exciting and detailed than just a single gift. One of my favourite ideas is a scavenger hunt.

This is an amazing way for you and your partner to bond and have some fun together. You don’t even need to leave the house to do it, although you can do one of those “Find the next clue where we had our first kiss” type hunts, but you run the risk of waiting for hours as your partner works their way through each one.

One of the fun things about this kind of experience is that you can customise it with your DIY gifts throughout. For example, let one of your clues lead to a box of homemade treats that you know your partner loves. Another one can lead to a handmade gift (maybe a keyring, a photo frame with a picture of the two of you, etc).

You can get very creative with this kind of hunt. Between your efforts to coordinate the clues and your work on creating homemade items to surprise your partner with, it’s sure to be well-received!
