[eltd_dropcaps type=”normal” color=”” background_color=””]I[/eltd_dropcaps] visited ‘b. The Communications Agency’ press day on a rainy day in November, but was delighted with what I saw. Firstly, let me start by saying that Spring/Summer 2020 has some exciting things in store for us: beautiful organic linens, stylish jumpsutits made of recycled materials and beauty oils made to improve our skin and mood! Nothing is perfectly sustainable yet, but it is a good start.
Let’s begin with beauty!
You may be familiar with BYBI skincare but, if not, then let me tell you how wonderful their products are. When sourcing their ingredients they look for resources that are renewable, quickly replenished and ethical. They prioritise ingredients which can be grown in the UK or upcycled from the juicing industry. All of this means that the products BYBI create will have as little impact on the environment as possible and the plants used have more than one purpose. That’s in addition to making your skin feel super soft and healthy! I recommend the Bakuchiol Booster which is a natural retinol alternative.
70% of BYBI’s packaging is made from glass which is great because it’s infinitely recyclable. And when it is unsafe or not so convenient to use glass, like for their balms, they use a bioplastic material derived from sugarcane. One of the positives of using sugarcane is that by growing it, it absorbs CO2 which means that it is a carbon neutral material. Sugarcane is also 100% recyclable. For these reasons alone it seems like a much better option than regular plastic.

Not yet released is FFØR haircare, a Scandinavian inspired brand. I am very excited to try out their Re:Plenish Mask which promises to be intensely nourishing and deeply condition hair for frizz-free, soft results. What makes this brand so intriguing is that they do not use any synthetic colours or mineral oils, all ingredients are ethically sourced, completely vegan friendly and gluten free. The packaging is made of recycled materials which means that they help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and lower the demand for fossil fuels which are needed to make new plastic. I think FFØR could be one to watch!
If you’re wondering which product has been made to have a positive impact on our mood as well as skin. Well, that would be Scientia’s Dawn Elixir and Dusk Elixir. They’re a 100% natural blend of 23 oils. Dawn Elixir in particular is full of vitamins, antioxidants and fatty acids which aim to hydrate, boost radiance, reduce dullness and balance natural oil production. It smells incredible and is said to energise and boost confidence. Yet putting on the Dusk Elixir before bed will help you get that good nights sleep you deserve with it’s subtle notes of Lavender, Ylang Ylang and Frankincense. Not only will it help you relax but it replenishes and regenerates skin while you snooze.
Now, onto fashion.
Nimble activewear caught my eye, not only because it looks great, but because it’s made using recycled plastic bottles! One sports bra = 2 plastic bottle, while one pair of leggings = 6 recycled plastic bottles. I’m not a big gym fan, however, I might be persuaded to give it a go in their ‘silver sage brushed spot’ set in CompressliteTM fabric. Although their ranges are perfect for mixing and matching for a more casual look as well.
I do believe that the best way to shop for clothes is to first check out what your local vintage store has to offer. This is ultimately the most sustainable way to shop and you’re supporting local businesses. However, I know this isn’t always possible. People Tree are a pioneer in sustainable Fair Trade fashion, their products are made following the highest ethical and environmental standards which is why I think they are a great brand to invest in. Garments are created using a range of organic cotton, TENCELTM Lyocell (which is a very exciting sustainable man-made fabric) and responsible wool. They are then crafted using traditional skills such as hand embroidery, weaving and knitting. What we are then presented with are beautiful, classical pieces that can be worn season after season.
Of course there were many more great brands at the press day, I’ve only just scratched the surface of what’s to come.
