Houseplants bring a number of wonderful health and aesthetic benefits to your home. Here are the best low maintenance houseplants for minimal effort.
House plants are an addiction of mine. Once you start buying them, you’ll never stop. They bring life into any room and have been proven to make you happier, less stressed, and clean your air space. Many of them are really easy to look after, which is great for when you don’t have much time (or are a tad forgetful!). I’ve created a list of some of my favourite house plants of all sizes, making them suitable for any home...
Thriving in lower light conditions with high humidity, aloe vera is great for a bathroom or for people who don’t get lots of light in their homes. They are a tropical species known for their medicinal properties, and more mature plants can be harvested. They love to be cramped up in a smaller pot, so resist the urge to repot too soon. Water roughly once a week, but make sure the soil is dry beforehand.
A big, leafy plant with lots of character. These are instantly recognisable and very popular thanks to their unique shape and the little effort required to keep them. Its official name is Monstera, but earned its nickname due to the holey leaves which look like swiss cheese. Place this in a bright room, but with only a few hours of direct sunlight a day, and water every couple of weeks.
Coming in lots of different shapes and sizes, cacti require minimal watering and lots of light. Tiny ones are perfect for smaller homes and spaces, such as window ledges or desks, and larger ones can provide a statement feature. Picking them out in person is best, as you can choose an interesting and appealing shape. I especially love ones that flower, as it lets you know you’re taking good care of them.
Also known as the lucky plant, money tree, or friendship tree, jade plants have known to be passed down through generations. They grow in lots of different, gorgeous shapes and are very hardy. You’ll recognise their spoon-shaped leaves, sometimes with a red edging, and their woody stem makes them look like a miniature tree. Water once every 2-3 weeks when the soil is dry and give it lots of sunlight.
Adding personality to any room, ivy is a very versatile plant that can be placed almost anywhere. They thrive best in shady conditions, so are again perfect for bathrooms or low-light homes, but grow well in strong light, too. Position it on a shelf to let it gracefully drape down, or else let it climb up a fence. It truly is very flexible, and only requires watering about once a week.
