A Hidden Gem in The French Pyrenees

La Taillede is one of the most wonderful places I have ever visited. Tucked away, below Mount. Canigou, is a beautiful eco-farm and holiday rental, run by an incredible family consisting of Matt and Ali, their two kids, and Ali’s parents Gina and Nigel. The renovated farm house is around 600 years old and is quite simply stunning.

It is clear that Matt and Ali have put their heart and soul into renovating this property and making it a perfect, relaxing escape for their guests. In the summer of 2021, the family introduced a new swimming pool, sauna room and an ice-cold plunge pool to enjoy which have been proven to be quite popular. There are also two hot tubs on site where you can soak up the sun, the peace & quiet and the magnificent views.

If you’re into hiking then there are plenty of walks to go on in the surrounding area for you to admire the mountains and lakes. Plus, it’s only an hour drive from the coast if you fancied a dip in the sea. However, I guarantee you will be more than happy staying close to La Taillede. Before you book, have a look on their website and Facebook page as they host amazing yoga retreats. I can’t think of a more wonderful place to take some time for yourself and clear your mind.

In the summer, Ali hosts meals for all her guests to enjoy together on the terrace – to say that Ali is an amazing cook would be an understatement. Her food is healthy, delicious and incredibly satisfying. Ali cooks predominantly vegetarian food and is currently trying out new vegan recipes to share. The family are looking to become self-sufficient and so reject any notions of factory farming and unsustainable practices.

La Taillede aim to have an ecologically sustainable farm and lifestyle. They grow their own vegetables as well as their own forest and workshop which means they can make almost anything they need out of wood. This includes their hot tubs and many of the furnishings in the gîtes. They also have plenty of animals such as sheep, chickens, pigs, dogs, cats and donkeys. Although these animals are not for eating, they help sustain the beginnings of a permaculture here. This place is truly a breath of fresh air in this hectic world.

The options for holidaying on the property consist of 2 smaller gîtes, 2 larger family-sized gîtes and a Yurt. All of the accommodation is lovely and rustic and is sure to make you feel right at home. Yet, it’s Ali and Matt’s hosting which make this place extra special. Not only are they genuinely lovely and kind people but they are also full of amazing travel stories. This is a place you really do not want to miss out on.

So, what are you waiting for? You can book your stay at La Taillede directly through their website or Airbnb.
