There are plenty of ways to soothe, hydrate and brighten your under-eye area. Here we share our top beauty tips for tackling bags, dark circles, and wrinkles.
If there’s one beauty secret that women all over the world should know about, it’s that looking after the skin under your eyes is super important. Every single day, we put our skin through a lot. From exposure to harmful UV rays to wearing makeup and drinking coffee each day, it’s no surprise that our skin can often end up feeling dull, tired and in need of some TLC.
The skin around the eye is very delicate and therefore it’s far more likely to show signs of aging if not looked after properly. Not only is the skin under our eyes prone to dark circles and puffiness, but it’s also more susceptible to fine lines and wrinkles too. As the skin that surrounds our eyes is thinner than any other part of our face, it generally tends to be more sensitive and requires that extra bit of care to keep it in top condition.
Before you throw your arms in the air in despair, don’t worry. The truth is, the sooner you start to care for the skin under your eyes, the better – and it’s never too late to start showing your eyes some love. There are plenty of ways to soothe, hydrate and brighten your under-eye area, and properly looking after your skin can reduce puffiness and even prevent the early signs of aging.

One of the best things you can do for your under-eye skin is invest in a good eye cream and work it into your daily skincare routine. Eye creams are developed and designed with delicate skin in mind; while many creams, moisturisers and skincare products can irritate sensitive skin, eye creams are specifically formulated for the eye area. They’re packed with better ingredients for your eyes, they help to reduce skin sensitivity and they offer a huge range of super-charged benefits too, such as minimising fine lines and providing extra moisture.
When it comes to finding the right eye cream for you, avoid creams that contain synthetic fragrance or fragrant plant oils. Instead, look for creams bursting with antioxidants and skin-repairing ingredients, such as Vitamin C, Peptides and Hyaluronic acid. There are different eye creams for different skin concerns.
In my opinion, everyone should have a pack of eye masks in their drawer for when their under-eye skin is feeling puffy, dull or sleep deprived. Eye masks aren’t just good for balancing out dark eye bags; they can provide an instant boost of deep hydration, treat fine lines and wrinkles and fool everyone (including your boss) into thinking that you have had your full eight hours of sleep too.
If the skin under your eyes needs a quick boost or you want to achieve a healthy, bright look but you don’t have your favourite branded under-eye masks to hand, here are just a couple of my favourite DIY masks to try. You most likely already have the ingredients lying around in your cupboard…
There’s a reason why rose water has been used for centuries as the ultimate secret beauty tool. Created by distilling rose petals with steam, rose water is anti-inflammatory and has hydrating and soothing abilities. When mixed with cucumber (which is packed with water to hydrate your skin), it’s the perfect combination to leave you with a hydrated glow.
Simply mix a teaspoon of cucumber with a teaspoon of rose water. Apply on a cotton pad and place it under your eyes for 10 minutes, then rinse.
If the skin under your eyes is feeling dry or looking dull, a quick avocado and aloe vera eye mask is a great way to naturally moisturise the skin and leave it feeling soft and hydrated. Avocado is packed with skin-friendly nutrients, whereas aloe vera is extremely soothing and can help fight skin-aging.
Mix one teaspoon of avocado with one teaspoon of aloe vera and apply around your eyes. Leave for 10-20 minutes for a deep hydration boost.
If you’d prefer to have a stash of eye masks in the cupboard to throw on during busy days, some of my favourites of the moment include Pixi’s DetoxifEYE Depuffing Eye Patches, Garnier’s Hyaluronic Acid and Coconut Water Eye Sheet Mask and Estée Lauder’s Stress Relief Eye Mask.
Ever since I was young, my mum has stressed the importance of SPF to me. At every opportunity, she was lathering me in the stuff – and I’m of course eternally grateful. But it still shocks me how many people don’t use SPF in their daily routine or take those extra steps to protect their skin from harmful UV rays. As mentioned above, the skin under our eyes is super sensitive and delicate, so it’s no surprise that it needs particular care and extra protection from the sun.
Using a cream with SPF can prevent future damage to the eye area and prevent the signs of aging on the skin (something that the sun rapidly speeds up). I can’t stress the importance of working sun cream into your morning routine; even if the sun isn’t shining outside, you still need it. Your eye skin shows signs of ageing before any other part of your body, simply because it’s the thinnest and least resilient skin – so we need to protect it at all costs. Purchase a moisturiser with a high SPF or add a gentle sun protectant to the end of your skincare routine each morning. Your skin will thank you for it!
