This year, my New Years Resolutions are low-key and low-maintenance – I think this is the secret to actually succeeding in them. But the one New Years Resolution I think I’ve already mastered is the ability to look “fresh-faced” without purchasing any new makeup or skincare products.
If you think about it, it shouldn’t be that difficult. The idea that the trend of natural, just-woke-up skin and bushy boy-brows should require more investment rather than less seems counterproductive and a waste of money. As someone who already has a rather full make-up bag, I’m confident that most women already have everything they need for a “fresh-faced” look at their fingertips, and I’m going to show you how to use your current products to create this look. So, put your wallet away and get ready to experiment!
I’d like to start this controversial tip by making it clear that I am not a skincare expert. I don’t know if this technique will achieve the look you want, all I know is that it works for me.
If you’re looking for the sheer yet dewy finish that conceals most blemishes while still appearing natural, give this trick a go. Take your daily moisturiser (don’t use night cream, it will be too thick) and mix it with one pump of your favourite foundation. Mix it with a blending brush, and apply to your face like a tinted moisturiser. You’ll notice that the coverage won’t be as strong, but the glowy finish that you will achieve definitely makes up for it. Use concealer sparsely to conceal any stubborn blemishes, and only use finishing powder around the nose and chin.
Not only will your foundation last longer, as you’ll be using less each day, but your skin will glow all day!
We all love a perfect pout, but it can be a lot of work and upkeep to master that lip-liner technique. If you want a quick and low maintenance solution, put down the lipstick and pick up the tinted lip balm. True, you may have not touched this since you were fifteen, but it’s time that this product made a come-back. Not only does a tinted lip-balm provide just the right sheen, but it makes your lips look healthy and glossy without appearing sticky. Plus, it smells good!
The next balm you’ll need is a good, old-fashioned tub of vaseline. Take a tiny amount and apply it like a highlighter to your cheekbones and eyelids to give your skin an hydrated, fresh finish.
Remember how I told you to put down the lipstick? Well, pick it up again.
A powdery blush may be what you’re used to using, but the final effect is very mattifying and won’t achieve a dewy finish. Instead, take a lipstick that best matches your favourite blusher and apply small dots of it upwards across your cheek to your cheekbone, then blend. Don’t forget to dab a little on the bridge of your nose too – this will give the perfect sun kissed finish to an everyday look.
Are they natural? Are they extensions? Are they tinted?
Those are the questions that will be spinning through everyone’s heads. To achieve these envy-inducing eyelashes, I would normally recommend splurging on an eyelash lift and tint. But, in the interest of using what you’ve probably already got in your makeup bag, I’d recommend digging out the eyelash curler and a natural mascara.
Curling your eyelashes before applying mascara is a step that is often missed, but makes the world of difference. Remember to squeeze and hold for ten seconds before gently releasing, then finish with a coat of mascara that best matches your natural colour, such as brown. If you don’t have one, a clear mascara or eyelash primer will also work.
If the only bronzer you have is a glitzy, glittery option which is best suited for nights out, I’d recommend leaving this step out. But, if you do have a light, natural bronzer without the sparkle, then dusting this across your face can provide the perfect finish for a healthy glow. If you feel that your look isn’t quite finished, take an eyeshadow brush and use it as a little colour for your eyelids.
And, voilá! The perfect, fresh-faced look that you can achieve without breaking the bank.
