This Is How Often You Should Cut Your Hair

How often is too often? I talked to Gina Conway herself to find out just how often you should get your hair cut…

I was given the opportunity to get my hair cut at Gina Conway Salon & Spa Wimbledon and I have to admit, it was one of the best haircuts of my life. The hairstylist, Davide, just got me. He understood what I wanted, how I wanted it, and exactly what suited my face (the pre-cut massage and overall calmness of the super sleek salon helped too!).

Despite only asking for a maintenance trim, Davide gave my hair life, adding volume and layers that frame my face. I can’t wait to go back. But how soon is too soon? I talked to Gina Conway herself to find out just how often you should get your hair cut…

“I recommend clients have their hair cut every 6 to 8 weeks,” Conway said. “If your hair is short and you want to maintain the style and shape, going longer than 6 to 8 weeks makes the shape out of proportion with your features,” she explained. Generally, the same goes for longer hair, it’s just not as obvious.

According to Conway, hair type does have an impact on how often you need a trim. “Coarse hair is stronger and can handle hair cutting less often,” Conway told Cohorted Cult. “This type of hair can go 10 weeks without cutting if the hair is in good condition,” she continued. Fine or coloured hair, on the other hand, will split and break if you leave too long between cuts. “It is twice as likely to break off, causing it to look straggly and frayed,” she warned.

To prolong the time between trims, Conway recommends using a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week. And if you’re trying to grow your hair? “You should stretch your cuts to an increase of one to two months on top of your normal visits if you can,” Conway advised. “Make sure your hairdresser only takes minimal off the ends to remove the split ends,” she added.
