I have been cleansing my face morning and night since I was 12, and whilst the products may have improved the routine has stayed the same. But when I started to see more and more online videos of people suggesting otherwise (ok you got me, it was Tik Tok) I decided to switch up my routine.
For a week at least.
I’m in the habit of cleansing my face morning and night and to be honest I’ve never really questioned why, it’s the routine my mam instilled in me at a young age and the one I’ve been following ever since. My mornings simply include cleanser, moisturiser and SPF.
However, over the past few weeks my Tik Tok For You page has been filled with videos of people saying that it’s better for your skin if you skip cleansing when you wake up and honestly you might hate me for saying this, but I believe the Tik Tok girlies when it comes to any sort of life hack.
I must admit though I was sceptical when I first heard this, but the more videos I came across the more I started to question my routine.
However, the defining moment was when my For You page showed me a video of Salma Hayek claiming in a recent GQ interview that she also doesn’t wash her face in the morning.
She goes on to say that her grandmother taught her that overnight your skin works to regenerate by producing all the oils it needs to remain youthful and that’s why she doesn’t wash her face in the morning as she’d be washing away the work her skin has done overnight.
I know she isn’t a dermatologist, but I mean look at her! And look at her skin!! So I gave it a go, I delved into Tik Toks latest controversy and put my cleanser away.
Before I tell you how it went, I would like to clarify that I’m no skincare expert and my opinion is obviously based off what works for me and my skin so you may have different results if you were planning to give it a go and switch up your routine.
As I mentioned at the start of this article, I was sceptical, especially as I have acne prone skin and have spent the last few years developing a routine that works well for me and keeps my skin clear, for the most part.
I know in this instance it seems a bit dramatic given that a week isn’t a very long time but honestly, I didn’t want to see all that hard work I’ve put into my skincare routine reversed.
And luckily, I didn’t.
If I’m being completely honest, I didn’t really notice much difference at all. I did see a few spots start to appear on my cheeks which is where I mainly suffered acne flare ups so maybe had I carried on I would have noticed some more extreme results but for the most part everything stayed the same.
The biggest take away I got from ditching cleanser in morning was how much time I saved getting ready. Just splashing water onto your face is so much quicker than cleansing and it did leave my skin feeling more hydrated and looking dewy when I applied makeup.
However, I don’t think this is enough for me to fully let cleansing go, as someone who doesn’t wear makeup every day, I would rather prioritise my skin feeling nice and fresh rather than my makeup looking good.
Personally, I enjoy the feeling of having cleansed skin in the morning too much to commit to changing my routine fully, but I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised as I imagined I wouldn’t get past day two or three.
