Fashion can play a huge role in films. Some of the most iconic movies are remembered not only for the narrative, the production and the actors but for their sartorial credentials too. Here, we share our top fashion highlights from some classic movies of the last 60 years and have put together a shop now edit so that you can recreate them.

Alicia Silverstone in Clueless
Fashion-loving Cher Horowitz had so many memorable outfits in the 1995 film Clueless, it was hard to pick just one. The most impressive part is that most of them are still on trend today. However, the plaid Dolce & Gabanna suit is by far the most recognised outfit within the film, earning itself a place in the fashion in film hall of fame.
Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman
This one-piece worn by Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman leaves little to the imagination but has become synonymous with the film. The original dress is by the swimwear brand Hunza (relaunched as Hunza G in 2014) with many brands replicating the style since the film’s release in 1990. Paired with an oversized red coat, thigh-high boots and a newsboy cap, it is easy to see why this look has remained unforgettable all these years later.
Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s
It would be hard to write about fashion in film without mentioning this look. It is instantly recognisable to one of Audrey’s most notable characters, Holly Golightly, in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The black sheath dress was designed by Hubert de Givenchy and tailor-made for the actress. This style dress is the epitome of 1960s elegant style and whilst ‘simple’, it will forever be remembered as a legendary look.
Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface
Another movie with too many iconic looks to choose from, but thanks to Michelle Pfeiffer’s role as Elvia Hancock in Scarface, silk slip dresses are still very much a staple in our wardrobes almost 40 years later. Patricia Norris was the costume designer on the classic crime film, and rather than dress Michelle in garments made up of bold colourful prints, which were very typical in the 80s, she opted for styles that emulated the Hollywood glamour of the 1930s. This look is truly timeless and continues to inspire designer brands such as Armani today.
Olivia Newton John in Grease
Because who hasn’t recreated this iconic look for Halloween? For those of you who have never seen Grease (how is that possible!?) – by the end of the movie Sandy drops her ‘good girl’ image in favour of black skin-tight pants, an off-the-shoulder top to match and statement red mules. ‘Bad Sandy’ is born and so was the desire for many girls to undergo a transformation themselves.
