Left Field Dance-pop Music To Broaden Your Horizons

We all like to seem cooler than we actually are, and the most accessible way to do that is through a well curated playlist! So here’s my guide to 5 tracks from recent years that’ll help you stand out but won’t have you thinking too hard about enjoying it.

You Could Be – Anz, George Riley

Anz has been tearing up the UK underground dance scene for a good few years now, with her heady, genre-tweaking style that floats around from acid house to breaks and garage. You Could Be takes this signature into a fullfledged pop song, the high synth melody setting the scene of a dizzying, bubbly romp, with Riley’s vocals doing the heavy lifting on the loveably shallow lyrics.

Blenda – Charlotte Adigéry, Bolis Pupul

The Belgian duo released their full debut album together earlier this year after a well acclaimed EP featuring one of my favourite songs of recent years, High Lights. These two aren’t afraid to slightly unsettle their listeners with a wry, tongue-in-cheek political angle to Adigéry’s lyrics, cut alongside Pupul’s slick electropop production. Opening the song with the line ‘Go back to your country where you belong’ sets the tone of a subversion of pop’s easy listening expectations, and relocates the immigration debate in a space generally designed.

Does It Make You Feel Good? – Confidence Man

Performing one of Glastonbury’s most well reviewed sets this this year, Confidence Man’s energy is undeniable. The front duo are called Janet Planet and Sugar Bones for god’s sake. They’ve already been cutting up the Aussie charts with their latest album Tilt, but their most popular single Does It Make You Feel Good? still stands out as a cut above. It hits all the notes of a polished piano house banger, cheeky synths and a big chunky bassline to carry you through. To answer the titular question, hellll yeah it does.

Follow You – Kornél Kovács, Aluna

As the summers of 2020 & 2021 showed us, pop-y UKG is very much in vogue and exceptionably listenable. Producer Kornél Kovács has teamed up with Aluna (of AlunaGeorge repute) to bring a tune that’s sure to be heard at afters across the country. Taking a departure from his previous sillier productions, Kovacs shows us his capabilities in a more melancholy scenario to great effect.

Agitations tropicales – L’Impértrice

France does many things well – wine, cheese, fashion – but it also turns out they do shimmering disco-pop. L’Impértrice has already achieved a widespread audience across France, but if you’re looking to feel a little bit of the French-touch, Agitations tropicales is a great place to start. Smooth, sleek and endlessly charming, it’s hard not to imagine yourself poolside on the riviera with this song.
