Join us as Lydia Reeves talks about her fascination with the human body, her struggles with accepting her own body, transitioning from being a prop maker to doing art full-time, and how she uses art to celebrate the beauty of the female body… In all its forms.
Lydia Reeves is a female body-casting artist who actively works against body shaming. Her mission is to empower women to understand how incredible their bodies truly are, and to celebrate them with pride and positivity.
Lydia developed an interest in casting when studying her fine art degree. She was intrigued by the traditional idea of casting a hand, which is commonplace in art school, and she immediately thought… “If I can cast a hand, I’m sure I can cast my vulva!”
Growing up, Lydia hated her own body. Her constant thinking about it, comparing it to others, and seeing the media obsessed with female celebrities’ bodies meant that the female form naturally became her primary focus when creating art.
In this episode, she chats about her journey from hating her own body to accepting it, using her experiences to shine a light on others who may be going through the same darkness, and how openness and acceptance can be a form of therapy.
Lydia is currently promoting her book, My vulva and I. It’s a collection of photographs of her casts, complete with empowering (although sometimes emotional and traumatic) stories of real women who have found acceptance of their own unique and beautiful bodies!
