One Dress, Three Ways

A truly versatile dress is a coveted staple of any wardrobe.

In the modern, conscientious fashion world we are shaping, some of us would ideally like to cut down on fast fashion spending and waste, so being able to take one dress from day to night simply by switching accessories, should be something for which we all have the know-how.

As we strive to become more conscious consumers, making one dress suit a variety of occasions is a challenge but it’s completely possible and easier than you might think. The right dress can be dialled up for a night out, or toned down for a day date, simply by swapping heels for flats.

In this article, we’re going to walk you through how to make one classic summer dress work in the office, on a brunch date, and for evening drinks by changing up the accompanying items you want to pair with it, keeping it to a limit of 4 easy-to-find accessories for a true capsule wardrobe.

For this example, we’ve chosen a midi satin slip dress from H&M. Priced at £24.99, it provides a brilliantly affordable base.

Let’s break down each factor:

Midi dresses are the perfect in-between, suitable for more modest office attire whilst simultaneously stepping up to be suitable for a night out.

Satin gives effortless elegance and versatility to any outfit.

The slip dress is a timeless piece brought back into the mainstream through the recent 90s fashion revival, and even more so due to its ability to be dressed up and down so easily.

And, we’ve gone with a neutral shade so we can add a splash of colour with ease.

The first scenario is dressing up for the office, now more of us are opting for flexi-working. What better excuse to get out of our loungewear! Depending on the dress code, you might want to pop a t-shirt underneath for a more demure, daytime look. Accessorise with an on-trend claw clip for a fuss-free, low maintenance hairstyle, bold, patterned loafers and an oversized navy shopper for an easy-breezy work look.

Next, we’re going on a brunch date so the t-shirt can be replaced with a slouchy cardigan, like this pretty lilac one from Monki – they offer tonnes of other colourways, too, like current season favourite sage green. As mentioned, the neutral tone of the dress means we can easily add a bright colour or two, as well as some complimentary gold jewellery – we’ve chosen these statement earrings from Accessorize. To nail the summer vibe, pair the look with a mini straw handbag and casual espadrille flatforms.

Lastly, the out out” look. Unfortunately, a jacket is sometimes still necessary for evening summer drinks in the UK, but this lightweight faux leather moto from Abercrombie has got you covered. As well as gold, silver accents compliment this dress perfectly – so match the metal on the jacket zips, bag details and jewellery for a put-together look. Finally, put on your dancing shoes and dress it all the way up with strappy black stilettos from NA-KD
