5 Sustainable Skincare Brands You Need to Know About

[eltd_dropcaps type=”normal” color=”” background_color=””]T[/eltd_dropcaps]here’s no denying the damaging effects the beauty industry has on the environment – think plastic packaging filling up landfills, deforestation led by a quest for ingredients such as palm oil and harsh chemicals in products that, washed down the drains, ultimately destroy ocean life. With a steady stream of eye-opening facts and figures and a growing demand from consumers for products that are nicer to nature, beauty has had something of a makeover in recent years. As big names join the revolution (L’Oréal has pledged to be fully sustainable by 2030), opting for a fully eco-kind skincare routine is now more achievable than ever before.

But, before we dive into the brands to be applauding and investing in, what exactly is sustainable beauty and what should we be championing? In simple terms, look out for environmentally friendly formulas that avoid harmful chemicals, have biodegradable or reusable packaging and formulated with natural ingredients from renewable sources and ethical production processes that respect the ecosystem. Armed with this checklist, here’s our guide to five clean, cruelty-free brands that promise nourished, healthy skin without harming the planet…

A sign of change? Exploring Selfridges Project Earth

[eltd_dropcaps type=”normal” color=”” background_color=””]T[/eltd_dropcaps]he catastrophic environmental impacts of the fashion industry are once again hot topic, with Instagram infographics and Twitter threads catalysing the spread of information about the harms of fast fashion. Yet the industry is booming, with online fashion giants still as popular as ever. Amongst the doom and gloom of fast fashion corporations, it can be hard to see a future that is both sustainable and allows for fashionability. Can clothes consumption and a reduced eco footprint coexist?

Are we in danger of becoming a contradiction?

[eltd_dropcaps type=”normal” color=”” background_color=””]A[/eltd_dropcaps]s the country begins to reopen, I can’t help but feel a little uneasy. I’m writing this as pictures of a strange-looking high street dominate the news. Hours before opening, queues of retail-deprived shoppers eagerly await their turn to embrace what’s inside. Some images illustrate textbook social distancing; others resemble frantic January-sale madness.

By the time this is published, I’m not sure how it will look. Perhaps we’re seeing more similar scenes, except the queues, extend to hair salons, cinemas, bars and restaurants.

Three Staple Shoes You Need this Summer

[eltd_dropcaps type=”normal” color=”” background_color=””]I[/eltd_dropcaps]f there is one thing that can lift any girl’s mood, it’s shoes! As Marilyn Monroe once said: “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world”. During this testing time, it is important we find things that make us feel normal and excited about the outside world again. Throughout isolation, air pollution has fallen drastically, so why not continue supporting our planet in other ways.

So if you’re ready to create a big impact and leave a small carbon footprint, these are the 3 summer staple shoes you need…

What is Greenwashing?

[eltd_dropcaps type=”normal” color=”” background_color=””]I[/eltd_dropcaps]’m sure by now, everyone connected to the internet is familiar with the term “fast fashion” and its detrimental impact on the planet. I’m here to tell you that it’s not your fault, but the fault of millionaire fashion companies that successfully brainwash us. The fast fashion industry is a mind-game, advertisement is more convincing than ever and as a society, we have the largest sum of disposable income than ever before.

eBay and Amazon launched the e-commerce industry back in 1995, when the entire online shopping market was valued at only $131 million. The Fashion and Apparel Industry Report estimated worldwide e-commerce revenue to reach $712.9 billion by 2022. We are living in an age where social media can make us feel so irrelevant for something as normal as repeating an outfit.

Plastic Free July: Be Part of the Solution

[eltd_dropcaps type=”normal” color=”” background_color=””]J[/eltd_dropcaps]uly is Plastic-Free Month and with the current pandemic causing the use of single-use plastics to skyrocket again, the timing couldn’t be better.

Like most people, I’m increasingly anxious about plastic consumption – both on a global level and on a personal level. Going plastic-free is one of the most effective ways to contribute positively to our planet. I know my habits were selfish, lazy, and unsustainable – but going all-in seems a bit like jumping into the deep end, and to be honest, is so far outside of my comfort zone that it seems equally unsustainable.

So, for Plastic Free Month this July, here are five steps you can take to reduce my plastic consumption and make my life more green:

Finding your Style when Charity Shopping

[eltd_dropcaps type=”normal” color=”” background_color=””]T[/eltd_dropcaps]here is a myth that every charity shop will smell, be overcrowded and dirty… and I can confirm this is completely true, but their positives outweigh these minor “issues”. There is definitely still a stigma surrounding charity shops; the idea of digging through old people’s clothes doesn’t exactly equate to the simplicity of exploring the ‘New In’ section of Topshop – but it is far more fun and rewarding.
