The Ultimate Festival Hair Care Guide

Heading to a festival this summer? You’re going to have an amazing time, but you might not be able to wash your hair all weekend. For many of us, this is a super scary prospect that can really put us off. Thankfully, there are lots of ways to keep your hair looking fresh for days.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you read this guide, there are a couple of must-buy essentials that will help you take care of your hair while you’re away.

  • Dry shampoo
  • Grips
  • Hair ties (scrunchies, bobbles and mini bobbles)
  • Your fave hair brush/comb

There’s also a couple of non-essentials that you might want to look into getting to play about with more fun hairstyles.

  • Hair rings
  • Coloured extensions
  • Hair mascara
  • Hair scarfs/turbans/headbands
  • Eco-friendly hair glitter
  • Eco-friendly coloured hairspray

GET INTO A GOOD ROUTINE BEFOREHAND

The secret to amazing festival hair? The prep. If you can hack it, try to get into a routine of washing your hair every four-five days before you get to the festival. This means that your hair won’t have an awful shock when you suddenly quit washing it out of the blue. If you wash your hair every day at the moment, try at least extending it to every other day. I promise, it will make a huge difference.

WASH AT THE LAST-MINUTE

Wash your hair as late as you possibly can before you leave, even if that means travelling with wet hair or doing your makeup on the journey. This will keep your hair fresh as a daisy for when you arrive. Even washing the night before can be a mistake, as you have a extra night of sleeping on your clean hair. If you like to blow-dry your hair before you go, stay away from any and all product, but more on that below.

STAY AWAY FROM PRODUCT

For as long as possible, don’t put ANY product in your hair. I’m not kidding. Anything you put in your hair will stay in it all weekend, and that’s a big, knotty, greasy commitment. Remember, products contribute to the production of oil and will make your hair dirtier a lot quicker. Choose hairstyles that don’t require products like hairspray or gel. If you think you’ll be tempted, don’t even pack them.

DRY SHAMPOO IS YOUR NEW BESTIE

While you need to try and hold-out from using the dry shampoo as long as possible, it will become your lifeline by the end of your festival. When you first need to use it, spruce your hair up with a light spray to avoid too much build-up. A top-tip is to put it in your hair before you go to bed, as this gives it time to soak up oil and means you don’t need to use your fingers to mix it in.

PICK YOUR HAIRSTYLES CAREFULLY

At the start of the weekend, try to avoid touching your hair too much, as this is another thing that can lead to grease and oil build-up. Wear it down, or opt for a super quick style like a messy bun or ponytail. As your weekend progresses, you can move onto half-up-half-down styles and increase your dry shampoo usage. Towards the end, you’ll want to try more complex options like French plaits and messy space buns. Be aware of the techniques you use, as methods like backcombing will be a nightmare to brush out and could leave you with knots all weekend.

COVER YOUR ROOTS

The biggest giveaway to dirty hair can often be the roots, so if you’re self-conscious, just hide them! A headscarf, headband or turban can be incorporated into a variety of hairstyles. This also looks like an intentional style choice, rather than a quick fix. On the last day, and I mean the last day ONLY, you can add glitter or coloured hairspray to your roots. This is a super-fun look to end the festival on, and can be used to improve to a variety of hairstyles. You’ll be able to wash your hair pretty soon, too, so you won’t regret the product usage.
