The Ultimate Spring Clean Guide

We all know that daunting spring clean is coming along and we’re all dreading having to assess the messiness and amounts of pointless stuff we’ve been hording over the past year. Nonetheless, a spring clean can actually be very therapeutic and can make an impactful difference in your daily life.

Personally, as a low-key hoarder, a spring clean always makes me much more content and I start feeling healthier knowing that there’s no mold growing anywhere and that the patchwork jeans that I bought 12 months ago are going to a much better home. However, I can get easily overwhelmed with the process, especially if I don’t have a set plan and products that I know I’ll be needing for my spring clean, so I decided to compile what I do and use for my ultimate clutter detox.

Clean Home Clean Mind

First things first – your home. This is the main starting point for any spring clean. Whether you live at home, with housemates or a 1-bedroom apartment, you need to remember your main goals for the clean, which are – Empty, clean, reconfigure (reconfigure meaning – throw out/donate or recycle anything that’s not essential, you don’t use anymore, broken, out of date). I like to allocate 1 full day where I clean my entire home, that way you know it’s all done and you don’t have to stress about doing another room or stuff piled up everywhere.

The Room Layout I like to use when doing a full home clean is to start off in the bedroom (that way when you finish a long day of cleaning you can head straight into bed), I then move into the bathrooms, kitchen and then living room.

Here are the things and products you need to remember to tackle in each room:

Bedroom Checklist:

  • Organise your drawers and wardrobe – get rid of all the clothes that you don’t wear, don’t fit or have seen better days. (if you have pieces that you’ve not really worn or could be repurposed you can sell them!, The simplest way to de-clutter your clothes is to organise in piles – Keep, Donate/Sell, Rags or Throw Out)
  • Change your clothes from Autumn / Winter to Spring / Summer
  • Wash your Pillows and Duvet (Not just your bedding!)
  • Rotate / Flip your mattress (helps with posture and gives the mattress more durability)
  • Clear desk and surfaces, give them a good wipe.
  • Wash your curtains or wipe down blinds
  • Clean mirrors and windows
  • Vacuum / Mop Floors

Bathroom Checklist:

  • Empty shelves and wipe down
  • Get rid of empty / half empty products
  • Check all expiration dates on medicine and beauty products (get rid of what’s out of date)
  • Wipe down and sanitize counters, sink, toilet and bathtub / shower.
  • Clean Mirrors, vanities and shower frame.
  • Vacuum / Mop floors
  • Bleach toilet bowl and shower tiles (especially if you use fake tan!)
  • Make a list of everything that needs replenishing.

Kitchen Checklist:

  • Empty drawers and cabinets and wipe them down (organise your drawers by sections)
  • Check the expiration date for all the food (make sure to put all your packaged food in clear storage containers, like pasta, cereal and snacks so that you’re able to see what you actually have ‘in stock’)
  • Empty out the fridge and freezer and deep clean it (make sure to chuck out the chicken tikka meal prep that’s been in the back of that freezer for months)
  • Clean your oven (it’s not as horrible as you think, trust me) and scrub your stovetop / electric hob.
  • Empty the crumb tray in your toaster and toaster oven.
  • Wipe down all surfaces and put away any unnecessary items.
  • Empty out and salt the dishwasher (all you have to do is put this (add link) in your dishwasher and turn it on)
  • Wipe down and disinfect the sink.
  • Vacuum (under the fridge too) and mop the floors.

Living room Checklist:

  • Remove all the curtains, cushion and sofa covers and wash them.
  • Dust and wipe all shelves, surfaces and blinds.
  • Wipe down all books and trinkets (organise your books by colour on the shelves for a more aesthetic feel)
  • Vacuum sofas, rugs and underneath furniture.
