What YOU Can Do to Make a Difference This StandUp to Cancer Day

Almost everyone has been affected by cancer in some way. Some may have fought it themselves and beaten it, or still be fighting their battle right now. Others may be supporting a loved one dealing with it, and some may have lost loved ones to it.
Whatever its effect on your life, raising awareness is always a worthwhile way to spend your time, especially on Stand Up to Cancer Day! This year it falls on the 8th of September, so why not make the effort to do your bit to show support and make a difference?

Here are some things YOU can do to stand up and fight the stigma, contribute to the research, support those who you love, and spread awareness about how others can help too.

Join a Stand up to Cancer Challenge

There’s no better time to join a challenge! Firstly, it’s for a great cause. But it’ll also give you a bit more accountability than usual, because you’ve got a really strong “Why?” behind it. You can find tons of different challenges, including things like “Hit 300+ golf balls this month”, or “Walk your dog X times this month”.

You might wonder why these things matter. Surely squatting 100 times or walking your pup isn’t helpful for those with cancer? You may be right, but the key is to encourage your friends, family, and social media followers to donate to cancer charities, both to support you along the way and to congratulate you when you reach your goal!

Whatever challenge you choose to do, make sure to post regular updates so your followers can see how you’re going. The more enthusiastic you are about it, the more you’ll end up encouraging others to donate. Here are some fun challenges you might be interested in joining to show your support, have some fun, and raise some funds at the same time!

Organise Your Own Fundraising Event

If cancer has made an appearance in your own life or affected someone you love, you may feel motivated to organise your own fundraiser.

The best way to go about this is to do it directly through the Stand Up to Cancer website. Sign up and you’ll receive a handy fundraising pack, loaded with exciting ideas. All you need to do is choose an activity, set a date, create your Giving Page, and start sharing the news!

You don’t have to do it this way, but it’s one of the easiest ways to go about it if you don’t
have event planning experience. The activities are varied, so there’s bound to be
something fun
for you to do
to raise some cash! Do a fitness challenge.
Hold a pop quiz.
Host a bake sale.
Have a yard sale.
Do a dress up day/costume party.
Host a dinner party/barbecue.
Host a backyard film night.
Do an eating contest

Make a Donation

If you’re not going to be creating your own challenge, you can always follow along with someone else’s challenge and donate towards it. You don’t need to wait for one of your friends or family to decide to do a challenge eitherjust search for cancer challenges or cancer fundraisers on social media and you’ll find something worthwhile to follow.

You can also simply donate to organisations like Stand Up to Cancer or Cancer Research UK. Many of these organisations rely heavily on donations to do what they do, so if you can’t find a challenge to follow and donate to, consider giving of your earnings to a worthwhile institution.

Help Raise Awareness

Awareness is half the battle won! That means awareness of cancer in multiple forms, and one of the best things you can do for Stand Up to Cancer Day is to help raise awareness and increase knowledge about the disease and its effects.

One of the most important forms of awareness is understanding what cancer sufferers and survivors go through. It’s hard to truly understand the process unless it’s been close to you or your loved ones, but raising awareness for the process can help cultivate empathy in others.

The second important part of awareness is selfawareness. Part of Stand Up to Cancer’s mission is to share information about the importance of detecting cancer early, spotting the signs and symptoms, and making informed decisions about how to deal with a diagnosis.

Show Your Support

If you can’t donate a significant amount and you’re not the type to host your own fundraiser, you might want to consider a more quiet approach. Grab yourself a piece of gear off the Stand Up to Cancer website and show your support in a quiet but powerful way.

Just walking through the store or hanging out with your buddies can turn into you spreading awareness without you even knowing it! This is a subtle way to
support cancer sufferers, cancer research, and even spark curiosity in others.

Get yourself a hat, a shirt, a piece of eyecatching jewellery, or even a pair of funky shoes that offer a message of support for those going through it and a reminder to others to get checked.
