Why Is Protecting Our Skin From UV So Important?

As we enter the summer months, we are reminded of the importance of using SPF everyday. Even though we should all be wearing SPF daily. Up to 80% of the sun’s rays can pass through the clouds so just because the sun is hiding, doesn’t mean the UV rays aren’t hiding from your skin.

Wearing suncream daily can reduce your risk of developing skin cancer, reduce your skin’s natural ageing, stop you from getting sunburnt and prevent discoloration caused by skin damage. Protection against the sun has been a part of our daily routines since ancient Egypt where rice bran extract and jasmine were used as a shield against the sun. Today, many everyday beauty products such as foundation and even lip balm contain SPF but sometimes, that isn’t enough to protect your skin – a lot of beauty products only provide SPF15.

75% of the signs of our skin’s ageing is caused by environmental factors such as UV Rays. UV rays create unstable free radicals which infiltrate unprotected skin and change the cells’ makeup which can lead them to behave abnormally and even destroy them. These often present themselves as dark spots and as increased wrinkles on your skin. These also destroy your skin’s natural collagen production and elastin, which your skin needs to stay firm and elastic.

Many makeup and skincare products are now formulated with at least SPF15 to reduce the amount of steps in your morning routine. However depending on where you are in the world and your own skin, you might need to still use a higher SPF. It is recommended to at least use SPF30 on a daily basis.

One of our go to sun creams is actually La Roche Posay Ultra Light Facial Sun Cream at SPF50, though you will also need one for the rest of your body.

No two people have the exact same skin type, so it’s always best to look into what your skin needs to stay protected all throughout the year. But everyone should use some form of UV protection in their daily skincare routine.

Our in-house beauty experts love L’Occitane’s Immortelle Precious Cream which also comes as a reinforced formula with SPF20. This can be worn under your makeup as well as on its own and provides other benefits, not just UV protection.

We often forget that our lips need SPF too. No, we aren’t talking about smothering sun cream onto your lips, we doubt that would taste very nice! Certain lip balms on the market such as Fresh’s Tinted Lip Balm with SPF 15, are absolutely fantastic at protecting your lips and making them pop!
