World Television Day

In a world dominated by streaming platforms, let us take a moment to remember the entertainment industry’s humble beginnings – the television set.

Way back in 1996, the UN general assembly declared that November 21st was going to be World Television Day. Why do such a thing, I hear you cry? Even back then, the UN recognised that TV was having an increased impact on our lives. I don’t think they knew how right they were…

A few statistics to blow your mind about TVs and us UK viewers:

  • As of 2019, over 28.5 million homes in the UK have at least one television.
  • We watch, on average, 22.5 hours of TV per week (and that doesn’t include Netflix!)
  • Over 15.3 million homes have more than one TV in their house.
  • While only 1.59 million haven’t got a TV at all.
  • We watch the most TV during Christmas time, when the average Brit spends over 25 hours in front of the telly!

TV seems to be at the forefront of everyone’s minds when we think about the negative parts of society, but it’s not all that bad. It’s been a hotspot of educational documentaries like the glorious Life on Earth series by David Attenborough (Planet Earth and Planet Earth 2 are ranked in the top 2 shows according to IMDB), and Sesame Street has been a part of many a childhood.

Why do I love TV so much? For me, it’s a pretty much an integral part of my day. I watch TV after dinner, but I make sure I limit myself to just one episode in an evening. I don’t like to binge anymore, and I like to mix up the programme! Currently I’m watching Runaways, and She-Hulk on Disney Plus, Dead-End and Wild Babies on Netflix, and naturally, Rings of Power on Prime.

I love the community that comes around watching the same TV show. I remember when I used to get together with a group of friends to watch Game of Thrones as it came out weekly, and I would love to do that now with Rings of Power! It sparks your creativity, helps you communicate better with others and gives you something in common.

It’s an amazing technological advancement. It’s brings you entertainment, news, education, right to your home. Just think how lucky you are to be living in a world with access to so much information at the click of a button!

So, how are you going to celebrate this year’s World Television Day? I’m going to indulge in a binge, and make it a self-care night. I’m putting on my comfiest pyjamas, inviting a couple of friends over, chucking a face mask on and grabbing a glass of wine, and then I’m going to sit back on the sofa, feeling zero guilt as I binge on the latest episodes of my favourite show, secure in the knowledge that I’m supporting the ideals of the UN.
